First Draft
Having completed the outline of your review, you are ready to write the text. The text should flow easily from your outline model and fill in the details of your outline. All results or ideas that are not common knowledge must be cited. Also every article listed in your references must be cited in the text. From 15 or more references, it will be difficult to write a review of less than 7 pages. Work toward 8 to 12 pages (double spaced, 12 point font, 1 inch margins on all four sides) of text. If your initial draft falls short, check to make sure that you are discussing the topics in reasonable detail. Your review should provide enough detail such that your reader has a good idea of what they will find in the primary research articles you are referencing. Conversely, if your initial draft is long, make sure that you are not belaboring some points.
When citing, it is acceptable to reference multiple papers for the same or similar ideas, experiments or conclusions. Please take note of how these multiple citations are constructed in your chosen journal model.
Also many reviews include figures or tables. These can either be reprinted from articles with permission of the copyright holder (you can assume that you have received permission to use a figure or table if you properly cite the source) or compiled from multiple sources. In the latter case, be sure to cite all sources. Also, you must make reference to each table and figure in the text of your review.
Journal articles are not formatted for the journal until near completion of the publication process. You should format your review in what is known as manuscript format. This format is easily achieved with a word processor, and it is rather simple in comparison to the typesetting used in journals.
Please refer to this article in manuscript format as an example for formatting your review. The salient features of the manuscript format are as follows. See the
